Girl Scouts Lending Support to Area Children
Our future young women are lending a helping hand to children in their area get off to a good start. Girls Scout Troops from Lisbon, Baltic, Sprague, Voluntown, Jewett City, and Griswold collected baby items for layettes for newborns taken into care by Department of Children and Families. The project is ongoing through First Congregation Church of Griswold, coordinated by Susan Harper, “Project Diaper Bag”. “Project Diaper Bag” provides layettes to provide everything a foster parent and baby will need to get them through their first night together. There are other groups and individuals who donate their time and love to help this tiny group of children. INTERFAITH STITCHERS, a Serving Ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock provides handmade quilts and sweater sets, along with several staff at DCF and retired individuals as far away as Massachusetts. Once completed the bags are given to the local Department of Children and Families for their use as children come into care. This group of scouts has provided 24 diaper bags and the layette items needed to fill them and is still working on more. They include troop 3013 Daisy Scouts, troop 3011 Brownie Scouts, 3064 Junior Scouts, and troop 3280 Cadet and Senior Scouts. Sandy Gauthier (a former foster parent herself) is their coordinator along with other willing volunteers who have given of their time and energy to teach the value of giving back to others in the community. “Project Diaper Bag” was their adopted project for this year to work on their Green Pin Service Unit. A total of 26 troops have participated to date.
